Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about POS machines, integrated systems, and our consulting services.
What is the difference between a POS machine and an integrated POS system?
A standalone POS machine (or card terminal) processes payments independently — the cashier manually enters the amount. An integrated POS system links your card terminal directly to your retail, hospitality, or accounting software, so amounts flow automatically and reconciliation is handled in real time.
Do I need a business bank account to get a POS machine in South Africa?
For bank-issued terminals (Absa, Nedbank, Standard Bank, FNB), yes — you will generally need a business account with that bank. For independent providers like Yoco or iKhokha, a business bank account is recommended but you may be able to sign up with a personal account, subject to their T&Cs and FICA requirements.
What fees are involved with a card machine in South Africa?
Typical fees include: a device rental or purchase cost; a monthly service fee (some providers waive this); and a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) — a percentage deducted from each transaction. MDRs in SA typically range from 0.5% to 3.5% depending on your volume, card type, and acquirer. PayPivot helps you benchmark and negotiate these rates.
How long does settlement take for card transactions in South Africa?
Most SA acquirers settle card transactions within 2–3 business days. Some providers offer next-day settlement for qualifying merchants. Instant settlement (same-day) is available with certain platforms like Yoco for an additional fee.
Is a PayPivot consultation free?
We offer an initial 30-minute discovery consultation at no charge. This helps us understand your business needs and gives you a clear sense of whether and how we can add value. Ongoing consulting engagements are quoted transparently based on scope.
How do I know which POS system is right for my business?
The right solution depends on your industry, transaction volumes, software environment, number of locations, and growth plans. That's exactly what our initial consultation is designed to assess. There is no one-size-fits-all answer — and any vendor that tells you otherwise is probably selling you their product, not solving your problem.
